Vulnerability scans, also known as VA scans, are mostly automated assessments comparing the software in your environment to known Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures (CVEs).
While they are part of a solid foundation, helping security teams cover patch management, they rely on testing only for known vulnerabilities and stay at a surface-level view of your actual risks. Therefore, they shouldn’t be considered a substitute for Penetration Testing.
This is why SECFORCE always recommend VA scans as an initial step or part of a bigger assessment, as even the smartest vulnerability scanners cannot do “human” things like joining the dots between unrelated, often seemingly harmless, vulnerabilities to open up system-level compromise.
